Top 5 Tips for Staying Primal this 4th of July Weekend
Holidays and parties can derail our Go Primal lifestyle when you're exposed to foods you don't want to eat, alcohol, desserts, social pressure to fit in, and the feeling of wanting to be part of the group. We are social animals. We want to join in and play with the other kids. We want to do what they're doing. With that in mind, here are my Top 5 Tips for staying primal this holiday weekend.
1. Consider your tribe
Since we are social animals, it makes it MUCH easier to stick with your chosen lifestyle if you surround yourself with like-minded people. Use that social pressure for good! I'm not saying ditch all your friends, but consider limiting time spent in situations that are detrimental to your health goals. Put you and your health first.
2. Avoid the Big 3
When I'm traveling, staying with friends for the weekend, or heading to a party where I know I'll be surrounded by less than ideal foods, I don't panic. I do my best and commit to always avoiding the big 3: gluten, dairy, and sugar. These are the 3 things that make me feel the worst. This gives me boundaries which make me feel more calm and in control. In certain situations or if someone is giving you a hard time, I simply say I'm allergic and that shuts down any discussion about why I'm avoiding these things.
3. Know Your Trigger Foods
I know if I eat a handful of popcorn, I will eat the whole bowl. This is a trigger food for me. Same goes for just about any sort of baked good. That's just me. I don't bother feeling bad about it, I accept it and know to avoid those foods. I also know that if I have a margarita I will want another one and a whole plate of nachos. mmmm...nachos.
4. Make Yourself a Treat
Treat Yo Self! While we're working to move away from using food as a reward, I think making a special Real Food treat for the weekend can be helpful. When everyone else dives head first into the red, white, and blue cupcakes, you can help yourself to something like this banana bread- just leave out the maple syrup, I promise you won't miss it. Or make some fun sweetener-free jello with pureed blueberries or strawberries or other flavors, fresh fruit salad with coconut milk whipped cream (leave out any sweeteners), cashew butter stuffed dates, dried figs with almond butter, grilled peaches, frozen grapes, or these almond butter cookies.
5. Get busy having fun!!
It's summer and you feel great from taking control of your health. It's time to celebrate that! Take your new found energy, balanced moods, and leaner body out for a spin! Try a new activity like water skiing, mountain biking, or hiking. Challenge the kiddos to a water ballon fight, slip and slide races, or hide and seek. Focus on connecting with friends and family away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grin. Get outside. Stick your toes in the water. Get some Vitamin D. Smile. Relax. Practice gratitude. LAUGH. MINUTE 4:25- Treat yo self.
