Dinner Plans: Big Ag or Local Farms?

Let's just say that you're not raising all your own food. Even if you have a great little lettuce patch and a spread of zucchini runners tumbling over the edges of a raised bed, if you're like me, you go regularly to the grocery store and at least occasionally out to dinner. Have you considered what a powerful position you're in?

What's your budget? Thinking like a venture capitalist for food

How much do you spend on food every year? Imagine you took that total and invested it all at once in a food production company.  How would you decide what to invest in? What kind of return would you want for your patronage and cash? What lucky business would benefit from your vote of confidence? This small thought experiment is an invitation to consider the social impact of our food choices. Every dollar we spend is a vote for more of the same. 

Tim Ferriss, in his book The 4-Hour Chef, suggests that 20 million people buying organic foods could create a tipping point that would shift the whole way food is produced in this country. His idea is to make cooking more accessible and foolproof so people are more aware of what good food tastes like so they'll want to buy sustainably farmed products so that the world of Big Ag will be rocked. I say, rock on.  

Real Food Revolution

The momentum toward organic and sustainable - in a word, "primal" - farming is building. Together we're learning to question, and reject, the artificial, industrial ingredients compounded in a lab and pushed by Big Ag. This has sucked money away from a more bio-diverse and localized way of farming, trading quality for quantity. Even though the amount we spend each week on groceries may seem tiny relative to the budgets of General Mills, et al., we can be part of a Real Food Revolution that adds up to real change. Next time you make plans for dinner, take a moment to consider what you're investing in.
